Postmodern portrait

Facing mutability and the possible disappearance of the family album as an object.

This piece wants to point out a possible vanishing of the family photo album as a specific material object due to the transformation that takes place when digital format appears. In some way, a digital image is not only revealed as filter, but also it calls a symptom out, one of our time. As such, the album is moved to a new location, a new way of presenting itself to the observer, one that perceives through a screen, which, by the way, gains an additional function as a frame, the idea of a portrait in the construction of a monitor. Since the analog form looses its value with the advent of the digital image, we face a critical absence of the material touchable fingerprint left behind by a format and its intelligible value as an object.

Have we not experienced the amount of virtual material stored in memory drives that have rarely been seen? As a result we perceive that this is perhaps a indicator of our condition as postmodern individuals. In fact, since a few years back, this has undoubtedly lead to a lack of experimentation with the narrative of the album per se, meaning the story and evolution that takes place when opening and following pictures pasted on pages.

The condition that forms a digital image from its construction and language, meaning numbers as well as its ability to be multiplied, transformed, and reproduced, guides us to our next issue of discussion which is the end of the family portrait and the family album. It is shown in two ways, first the virtual image manages to potentialize the production of photographic material, just because it has lowered considerably its production costs, its simplicity, and most important the way in which it manifests itself: instantly.

Finally, we trace a tendency in which every time more and more digital images just remain achieved senselessly in USB´s, hard drives, CD-ROM´s, and virtual platforms such as Facebook or Flicker among others, without ever having the need to be developed or revealed as a negative would.
To summarize, these twenty-one light box installations contain the images and the imaginary of any Colombian family album. They are the most commonly shared events where photography takes part of our lives.
